Today’s data centers contain a wide range of servers, devices and operating systems. All of these components require power and administration in order to work properly. They may even be distributed around the globe in various branch offices with little to no local IT support which gives the admin an extra challenge to manage them all centrally from thousands of miles away.

Business computing needs will always grow, which in turn increases the complexity of systems the IT administrator is responsible for managing. Datacenters have to continuously add new hardware and systems and optimize the utilization amongst them as business needs require without sacrificing their existing management platform; they have to maintain additional servers without creating additional support problems.

These challenges regarding heterogeneous infrastructure as well as the workloads running there can be addressed with two approaches: on one hand the central infrastructure management for simplified hardware management and on the other hand the workload management to balance the resource utilization amongst them.
