Groupware.

Groupware includes software systems such as email, calendaring, text chat, wiki and bookmarking. It supports multiple users working on related tasks in local and remote networks. Also called "collaborative software," groupware is an evolving concept that is more than just multiuser software which allows access to the same data. Groupware provides a mechanism that helps users coordinate and keep track of ongoing projects together.

A fundamental component of groupware is email, because emails are used to notify team members, obtain responses and send alerts. Email messages include live links to databases, intranets and the internet. Instant messaging (IM) is also widely used.

Magirus promotes open source groupware like Zimbra because we are convinced that:

  • Groupware shall be based on standards and be compatible to other systems in order to be really useful
  • Groupware shall remain simple and convenient for users because if they feel uncomfortable with it, they won't use it
  • Groupware software source code has to be open in order to be enhanced accordingly
  • Groupware software costs have to remain under control
